10 Principles of Good Clothing Design
Share
Most clothing is designed to follow trends that last only one season. This cycle encourages excessive consumption and demands increasing amounts of time, money, and attention from those trying to keep up. Very little clothing is designed to be effortless, timeless, and relevant for years to come.
If fashion aims to endure for generations, it must first cease to be fashion and be created with permanence in mind. To achieve that, it must solve more problems than it creates.
In order to identify the most important qualities of a permanent attire, we turned to the universal principles of design. And few people understood this better than industrial designer Dieter Rams, whose Ten Principles for Good Design have influenced generations of designers.
"Good design is innovative. Good design must be useful. Good design is aesthetic. Good design makes a product understandable. Good design is honest. Good design is unobtrusive. Good design is long-lasting. Good design is thorough, down to the last detail. Good design is environmentally friendly. And last but not least, good design is as little design as possible." (Dieter Rams — Ten Principles for Good Design (1970s), first presented publicly in 1976.)
Though originally written for products, the Ten Principles of Good Design reveal something important about clothing.
If a garment is truly well designed, it should not need to reinvent itself every season.
Following are the Ten Principles of Good Design, repurposed for clothing by Black Eterno.
10 Principles of Good Clothing Design
1. Good Clothing Design Is Innovative
Innovation is not decoration.
Innovation solves problems.
From employing the use of new technologies, to improving comfort and durability, to responsiveness to social and cultural shifts.
In clothing, the greatest innovation yet may be simplicity itself: a garment versatile enough to work in countless situations, durable enough to survive years of wear, and timeless enough to remain relevant long after trends have disappeared.
Black Eterno's contribution to clothing innovation goes beyond usefulness and durability.
We design clothing as a system that eliminates unnecessary decisions and creates space for more meaningful ones.
When your wardrobe requires less thought, your attention can be spent elsewhere.
2. Good Clothing Design Is Useful
Garments that restrict your movement, don't fit well or wear out fast are not useful. Garments that fit comfortably, are versatile and long-lasting serve their purpose.
A garment that spends most of its life hanging in a closet is not useful.
A garment that becomes part of your weekly routine is.
3. Good Clothing Design Is Aesthetic
Beauty matters.
But beauty and attention are not the same thing.
Many garments are designed to demand attention. Few are designed to earn it.
We are naturally drawn to simplicity, balance, and familiarity. Timeless garments often feel attractive not because they are attention-grabbing, but because they are easy to understand and pleasant to live with.
In clothing, aesthetic design often appears in the form of timeless essentials: garments that feel appropriate regardless of age, occasion, or era.
4. Good Clothing Design Is Understandable
The best clothing requires no explanation.
It communicates its purpose immediately.
You know how it fits.
You know when to wear it.
You know how it fits into your life.
Styles that avoid excessive detail, conflicting elements, or unnecessary complexity are easier to understand and easier to wear.
They fit naturally into daily life and reduce the mental effort required to get dressed.
The simpler the decision, the more energy remains for the decisions that matter.
The best garments simply work.
You reach for them instinctively.
5. Good Clothing Design Is Honest
Good clothing design reflects truth, authenticity, and integrity.
Its materials, construction, and messaging should align with its purpose.
It should not exaggerate.
It should not deceive.
It should not rely on branding alone to create value.
An honest garment earns its place through quality, fit, comfort, and longevity.
It does not overpromise.
It simply does what it says it will do.
6. Good Clothing Design Is Unobtrusive
Clothing design can be unobtrusive by focusing on harmony between form and function, ensuring the garment is both visually understated and highly usable.
This can be achieved in 6 different ways:
- Prioritizing Functionality
- Minimalist Aesthetics
- Seamless Integration into the Wearer’s Life
- Balance and Proportion
- Subtle Details
- Timelessness Over Trendiness
Perhaps no principle is more relevant to clothing.
Clothing should support the person wearing it.
It should not compete with them.
When clothing becomes the center of attention, the wearer disappears.
The best garments create space for the individual rather than the brand.
7. Good Clothing Design Is Long-Lasting
Fashion thrives on replacement.
Good design thrives on permanence.
A well-designed garment should remain desirable after hundreds of wears.
Not because it is trendy, but because it continues to fulfill its purpose.
Clothing that lasts longer:
- Reduces waste and environmental impact
- Conserves resources
- Supports a circular fashion economy
- Saves money over time
- Encourages mindful consumption
8. Good Clothing Design Is Thorough Down to the Last Detail
When unnecessary graphics, features, and distractions are removed, quality becomes impossible to hide.
Good clothing design is thorough because every detail matters.
The stitching.
The fit.
The fabric weight.
The drape.
The durability after repeated washing.
Every detail contributes to the whole.
A well-designed garment is not a collection of features.
It is a collection of intentional decisions.
9. Good Clothing Design Is Environmentally Friendly
The fashion industry often treats sustainability as a marketing category.
Good clothing design treats it as a consequence.
Products designed to be discarded create waste.
Products designed to endure reduce waste naturally.
Longevity is sustainability.
The longer a garment remains useful, the fewer resources are required to replace it.
At Black Eterno, we take this a step further by offering a Forever Warranty, encouraging garments to remain in use rather than be discarded.
Our goal is not simply to sell clothing.
It is to keep good clothing in circulation for as long as possible.
We also prioritize materials that are biodegradable, reusable, and recyclable.
10. Good Clothing Design Is As Little Design As Possible
This may be Rams' most famous principle, and perhaps his most misunderstood.
"As little design as possible" does not mean boring.
It means eliminating everything unnecessary.
The unnecessary graphic.
The unnecessary logo.
The unnecessary trend.
The unnecessary decision.
The same principle applies to a Black Eterno wardrobe.
A few dependable garments are often more valuable than dozens of options.
Having fewer decisions to make each morning reduces cognitive load and creates consistency.
What remains is clarity.
Beyond Fashion
At Black Eterno, we believe clothing should not be a source of constant consumption or daily deliberation.
It should support the person wearing it.
Reliable.
Permanent.
Effortless.
Because the best clothing is not the clothing you think about most.
It is the clothing that is ideal and effortless.
Fashion is ephemeral.
Good clothing design is permanent.
BLACK ETERNO
Stop thinking what to wear.
